Huddersfield Canal April 2003 (David)
I have tried to include some different shots of the trip from Martin's excellent selection.

Portland Basin at Dukinfield Junction where the Peak Forest, Ashton and Huddersfield Narrow canals meet.  This was our Monday night stopping point.  The building is now a museum and canal heritage center
Entrance to Peak Forest canal at Dukinfield Junction.  We went through there in 1990 on the Cheshire Ring trip.  Who would have believed that only 13 years later the whole of the Huddersfield would have been open.
Stalybridge - fantastic.  Do look at the link to the pennine waterways site for the story behind this.
More Stalybridge
Mike on locking duty - in the rain
Looking towards lock 26W on the Diggle flight
We are going through that hill - looking towards top lock 32W
Odd things grow at high altitudes
Train entering Standedge Tunnel
Chisel marks on tunnel wall
Rough walls with brick arches alternating
Tug helmsman looking back to the convoy of boats ready to take power off if signaled to stop by any of the temporary helmsman on each boat.  Read my extract from a letter home to get an idea of how tight things were.
The convoy emerges - better much later than never.
View of visitors center and train emerging from tunnel just above.
Some very nice housing by the canal
Wide pound before lock 31E
The Titanic Mill
Buildings are now part of Huddersfield University
Aspley Basin

East of Huddersfield quickly becomes rural again
One side of the canal is flanked with many sports fields
The entrance to the Huddersfield Broad from the Calder and Hebble navigation
We had wondered what this lump of wood was for - its called a spike and opens the side gates on the lock
Brighouse Basin. I managed to sling a wire over a foot rung on this BT pole close to the top. This made a reasonable support for the aerial.
And radio was played - I think this was a rare occasion when we actually made contact with the members of the Cambridge club.

The Pub is not too far - just here says Steve
Colliers Arms at Elland
After lunch nap for John while we enjoy the fine beer
While we continue to supp - nice beer but it is always served with a "head"
Good old fashioned bogs

A lock chamber in the Halifax Branch.  Although a lot of building has taken place and most of the route is now in private hands, it may be possible to restore this section one day.  The route is protected - good on you Calderdale Council
Our destination - Sowerby Bridge Basin entrance
Tuel Tunnel lock Sowerby Bridge.  For many years the canal was blocked by a road here.  Something useful does come from the European Community after all.
