LLangollen Canal

Here are my photographs.  I was only on the boat for 4 days and cycled back to the base at Trevor.

On the way back I encountered the local farmer trimming the hedges, Hawthorn, and got a massive puncture.  Fortunately I was equipped for such events and was soon on my way.

Because of the trouble we had with water levels I decided to visit Horseshoe Falls to see what the problem might have been since there was no shortage of water.  The Canal is a feeder for the reservoir at Hurlston Junction, taking water from the river Dee at Horseshoe Falls.  It was soon obvious what the problem was.  As can be seen from the photographs maintenance workers were clearing the grid that stops debris entering the canal.  This can easily block and restrict the flow.

Other members of the crew have not seen these photographs and did not go beyond the end of the canal at Llangollen so may find them interesting (I hope).

The first part of the canal is teaming with quite large fish and is very clear. Some six million gallons a day enter the canal from the river Dee

Apologies for the poor quality, scans of old photos.

Pushing the other boat back to a point where we could get past

We towed the other boat some way until the water depth improved then allowed them to pass.

We are going over that!  The canal hugs the valley edge and at the Ruabon Arm (where the Anglo base is) changes direction by 160 degrees

They have seen it too.

Ted Standing on top of the boat, its only 130 feet sheer drop to the right of the photograph.  You can see Nick looking down but well back from the edge, now there's a sensible chap.

I think this is the Fron Lift Bridge No. 28

I knew my cycle cape would come in handy, ideal for the narrow boat, light to pack, easy to dry.

Boatyard just west of Maestermyn Bridge ? No. 5

I think this Morris' Lift Bridge ? No. 45

Just before bridge 50 ? Allows livestock easy access to water.

Where?

I think this is Hurleston Locks 1 - 4

John saying goodbye to me at the start of my cycle ride back to Trevor base.  Where is this?

Railway and road ?
