Brian Davy Trip Notes (found by Mike Newport 2010) of the Four Counties Ring trip, 1988
Another great read and even more detailed than the 1987 notes. These notes were written in a Anglo-Welsh Log Book, the front cover shows the crew as :- Ted Chapman G1ALF,
Brian Davy G4TRO, Simon Gates G6RWT, Mike Newport G8VCN, and John Parmenter G6UGI The boat is STAFFORD cruising from the Anglo Welsh base at Great Haywood.
The Great Hayward base No. is written as 0889-881711, a cell number. Simon had a trial cell phone on loan from his firm for testing coverage and the crew were able to keep in touch with family and friends. This was a massive thing having BIG Lead Acid Gell batteries. The following call logs out and in show how useful it was.
Calls out listed as to Brian YAD, Dorothy Davy, Joan Parmenter, Max McKenna
Calls in listed as Bob Davy from Cathey Pacific flight 282 at 29000 ft over the Baltic just about to enter Russian airspace, 1-5-88 Toby Davy from London, Brian YAD, Dorothy Davy.
Simon writes in his memories about this on the home page and says he is sure this was the first Narrow boat to Airliner cellphone contact.
Note Brian's spelling of "Under Weigh". Being a Navy man this may well have been the correct spelling to him as suggested in the following quote from the web. "This a common enough misspelling to have become almost standardised; so much so that, in his 1846 Nautical Dictionary, Arthur Young wrongly suggested that under weigh was in fact the correct original spelling"
John Parmenter and Mike Newport have often referred to a boat from Harringay sporting the flag of the Bi-Gay-Lesbian-Transgender Group, was this the year and was that the boat Snowdrop(s) referred to by Brian?
